The Sri Chinmoy Centre was established in the late 1960s to provide an environment for students of Sri Chinmoy to practise meditation and spirituality. The Sri Chinmoy Centre holds twice weekly meditations for its members and is also involved in many other activities which seek to bring the ideals of a spiritual life into the day to day activities.
The most important activity of the Sri Chinmoy Centre is meditation. Sri Chinmoy teaches that meditation enables us to attain peace of mind and also bring our own soul’s qualities to the fore. If we can meditate early in the morning the fruits of meditation can last throughout the day. As a service to the community Sri Chinmoy Centres offer free meditation classes in many different locations where Centres have been established. Meditation Classes are offered free of charge in the ancient tradition of India, that spirituality cannot be bought or sold. These meditation classes cover the basics of meditation such as breathing exercises, relaxation exercises and learning the art of concentration. Also spiritual music is also used as an aid to meditation. The Sri Chinmoy Centre offer a variety of other activities to suit the interests of different members. Sri Chinmoy has composed many thousands of devotional songs and there are many musical groups within the Centre who learn and perform this meditative music.
Sri Chinmoy Centre – Athletics
Athletics and sports play an important role in the Centre. Sri Chinmoy says that being physically fit can be a great aid in the spiritual life. Running can also be a metaphor for the spiritual life. Through determined practise we can transcend our previous limitations and make progress both inner and outer.
” The physical and the spiritual are of equal importance. For us, the physical is the temple and the spiritual is the shrine. If there is no shrine inside a temple, people will laugh. What kind of temple is it? Again, if there is no temple, the shrine will not exist for long. So the temple and the shrine, the body and the soul, go together. ”
Sri Chinmoy has said that the world needs greater inner peace and outer dynamism. Thus members of the Sri Chinmoy Centre through the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team organised many races as a service to the running community. These range from short 2 mile races to the world’s longest certified running race the 3,100 mile held every year in New York, US. Also very popular in Australia in the Self Transcendence Triple Triathlon – a series of different triathlons.
One of the largest projects of the Sri Chinmoy Centre and SCMT is the very popular Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run. The Peace Run is a global relay through all the main continents of the world. It offers the chance for anyone on the route to participate and offer their support for bringing about greater world harmony. The Peace Run is not affiliated to any political view nor is it a fund raising activity. Many thousands of people participated in the last run of 2005.
